We’ve compiled some of the most commonly asked questions from our college recruits. If we haven’t answered your question here, please feel free to reach out to our human resources team.
What is your policy on the 5th year?
You are required to complete 150 hours of course work in order to obtain your CPA license. Recognizing the additional expense and time that has to be put into becoming a CPA, our firm offers a loan to pay for classes. The loan is forgivable after you have completed three years of employment with the firm. We also offer a full time employment schedule with summers off without pay or we can prorate your pay over the entire year so you have a steady income through the summer.
When do you make your hiring decisions?
Our peak hiring time is during the months of October and November.
What types of internships do you offer?
Internships give students the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and become immersed in the real world of accounting and business consulting beyond the classroom. Your experience at BlumShapiro will be well rounded – you'll be sent out on client engagements to get field experience with business consulting, tax, accounting and audit services as well as getting exposure to a range of industries. Your internship will give you the opportunity to learn about our firm and public accounting through interaction with everyone from new staff to our most senior partners, client experience and social events. We offer paid internships in both winter (January-April) and summer (June-August).
What is busy season like?
Busy seasons vary based on your department and industry focus. During your busy time, your chargeable hour goal will increase and you will be expected to work the hours necessary to accomplish your responsibilities. As a firm, we try to make these busy times as fun and stress-fee as possible, whether it is providing bagels, donuts and coffee on a Saturday, providing dinner during the week or organizing a happy hour.
What's my growth potential at BlumShapiro and how does the firm help me meet this?
We regularly promote our staff through an evaluation process, which includes evaluations for each engagement over 40 hours and bi-annual reviews. BlumShapiro also has a mentoring program that matches each staff and senior person with a manager or supervisor. For new hires, we have a peer mentor program pairing you with someone near your level who has already learned about the culture of our firm. Your peer mentor will help you as you adjust to your new work environment and offer guidance as needed.
